BETWEEN BOOKS AND WALKS

a festival of culture

APRIL 16TH TO 20TH | ALVITO AND VILA NOVA DA BARONIA
“PORTUGAL'S FIRST BARONIA” GYMKHANA

Spira is joining Alvito City Council in organizing a Gymkhana in Alvito and Vila Nova da Baronia, aimed at the municipality's school community.

On April 16 and 17, we will be discovering the town of Alvito, its heritage, history and culture, trying to awaken the interest, critical sense and curiosity of Alvito's children and young people about the rich heritage they have received!

APRIL 19, VILA NOVA DA BARONIA

18h30 VISIT “OF WHAT NO LONGER EXISTS”

A short stroll through Alvito to understand habits and customs through the voice of the protagonists: a “way of being” of which little remains. Where did the day laborers meet? Where did they do their laundry? Where did they dance at the longed-for balls? Where did they play with each other? Where did they learn to read and count?

REGISTRATION AT THE ALVITO TOURIST OFFICE (VISIT PRICE: €5.00)

20h00 ENO-GASTRONOMIC DINNER, “O CAMÕES” RESTAURANT

Wine tasting with Adega Cooperativa Vidigueira, Cuba e Alvito - Baronia d'Alvito wine

Adega Cooperativa de Vidigueira, Cuba e Alvito was founded in 1960, but its chronology goes back much further than its almost 60 years of existence. Its roots are intertwined with the history of the town itself, and with Vasco da Gama - the Count of Vidigueira, to whom D. Jaime, Duke of Bragança ceded the town in 1519. This is how Vidigueira's first links with the Gama family came about.

20h00 DINNER WITH SONG, “PAPA-BORREGOS” RESTAURANT

At the headquarters of the Papa Borregos de Alvito Choir Group, we are presented with a diligent, authentic space that reveals a great deal about the popular culture of this town. This is a living museum, with precepts of life, teachings that define all the material and immaterial heritage that can be found here. With the trappings of rural work, of the countryside, where it still functions today as a tavern, a meeting place, a place of association and conviviality, dry throats, at the table or at the counter, are wet with a glass of wine, where a snack is eaten, fresh bacon and where the voices of the young and the old come together to tell stories of life, melodies of Cante.
