ARTS & CRAFTS IMMERSION

PRINTED TALEIGOS WORKSHOP

WITH ALICE MARIA CANDEIAS

NEW DATES TO BE ANNOUNCED
ABOUT THE ARTISAN

Alice studied at the António Arroio School in Lisbon, where she learned the printing technique. She later graduated in Fashion Design and studied fabric printing in London. Passionate about the Alentejo, this is the region she chose to live in. She is president of the A Ciranda Association, which promotes artisans in the municipality of Montemor-o-Novo and runs a series of activities linked to handicrafts.

Stamping, with her own patterns, applied to traditional taleigos, is one of her main crafts. However, in addition to her art, another of her passions is teaching: she runs workshops frequently and works with both children and people with special needs.

SUMMARY

Can you sew? And print? In this Immersion with Alice Maria Candeias you can try both techniques to create printed patchwork taleigos. Taleigos are traditional Alentejo objects. Made from scraps of fabric that have been used over the years, taleigos are small and medium-sized bags in which people used to carry food for the day's work in the fields.

Before you learn how to sew them, you can make the use of these pieces of fabric even more special. Taking Vila Nova da Baronia as your starting point, you'll learn how to carve out an image, a symbol that you can find with a gouge, creating stamps on linoleum that will then be printed onto the fabric. Throughout this experience, you will not only have the opportunity to construct an extremely unique traditional piece, but also to experience and learn more about the customs and traditions of this region.
