ARTS & CRAFTS IMMERSION
WOODEN SPOON WORKSHOP
WITH ANDRÉ PANOIAS (BADLY BEARDED)
MARCH 1 TO 3
ABOUT THE CRAFTSMAN
Mal Barbado is about common memory; it's about recognizing the value of simple things, of everyday objects that have always been close but ignored. It tells the story of rural Portugal, of time and of things made with time. Of motivations, passions and poetry. Of the slow-paced, thoughtful and honest life of yesteryear. Mal Barbado's workshop produces everyday objects in wood, inspired by Alentejo Pastoral Art and focused on kitchen utensils, such a space for conviviality, sharing and meetings.
The hands behind Mal Barbado belong to André Panoias: craftsman, designer and curious; he has his workshop in the Historic Center of Évora.
SUMMARY
The saying goes: “He who has nothing to do makes spoons”. In this two-day immersion you can get closer to the tradition of pastoral art. Forgetting what you “have to do”, you will begin by carving one of the utensils most commonly created by Alentejo shepherds, looking for the same intuitive and free gesture in the production of a spoon. Secondly, having established the general shape of the object, he will decorate it by creating designs based on the geometries and patterns that have featured on the handles of these shepherd's spoons over the centuries.
