About the Craftsman
Out of love and passion for the land, Domingos Romeira Vaz does everything he can to keep the craft of cane basketry alive. He learned the arts and crafts of the Algarve mountains from a young age, first by making toys, then by making objects that imitate agricultural tools and activities. He was born on the ridge of Alta Mora, between two of the largest tributaries of the great Guadiana River, Odeleite and Beliche, whose banks are abundant in cane, sedge, some cattails and pita leaves.
Summary :
Basket weaving from wild cane is, first and foremost, a very interesting practice due to the material it uses. The cane that grows wild near watercourses and is harvested to clear fields has been used, in all its dimensions and for various purposes, by generations over the centuries. This week in September you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in this know-how through the traditional Alentejo technique, while experiencing the way of life and culture of this region. Master Domingos Vaz will guide you through the entire process so that you can learn the most sustainable way of harvesting this material, all the precepts of its preparation, the weaving and the decoration of your own basket.

You should bring a pocket knife and tight-fitting gardening gloves with you.

Spira Lab specializes in cultural and natural tourism programs to explore Portugal's unknown heritage, focusing on the Alentejo as the destination of choice with themed programs and unique experiences based on its gastronomy, history, heritage and landscape.
Each visitor to Spira Lab actively contributes to the preservation of heritage, as part of the revenue goes towards developing programs to enhance the value of the site and obtain patronage/sponsorship for the conservation of this common cultural heritage.
Spira Lab is an invitation to everyone to let themselves be carried away by the cultural, natural and gastronomic heritage of Alentejo.
The entire Spira Lab offer is the responsibility of Spira – heritage revitalization (RNAAT nº 61/2009, RNAVTurismo nº 8593, by Turismo de Portugal).
- Reservations are only valid with confirmation of payment and completion of the registration form . Any reservation is subject to availability and confirmation by Spira Lab. Spira Lab reserves the right to cancel any registration for which payment has not been made at the time of registration.
- If the Client is unable to participate , the amount paid may be credited for use in another program within a maximum period of 1 year or the Client may transfer his/her registration, provided that the new Participant meets all the conditions required for the program. Either case must be validated by Spira Lab. No refunds are accepted .
- The program may be subject to changes due to partner availability. Spira Lab undertakes to inform of these changes as soon as possible. If, due to circumstances attributable to Spira Lab, it is unable to comply with the program, the Customer has the right to cancel the program and receive an immediate refund or to accept an alternative proposed by Spira Lab (with possible price variation).
- The Client consents that his/her information, including personal data, may be transmitted to government authorities and local partners in order to carry out the defined program, including dietary preferences and limitations, health information or others.
- Spira Lab is obliged to provide insurance to all participants. Individual conduct is the responsibility of the Client.
