SEASONAL TOURS | 1 NIGHT AND 1 DAY
RESISTANCE IN AGRARIAN R EFORM:
FROM BALEIZÃO TO THE AIVADOS COMMUNITY
2024 | APRIL: 19 (NIGHT) AND 20 (FULL DAY)
In April, the month of Freedom, let's take a trip to the difficulties and achievements of the Alentejo plains. From the Estado Novo to Democracy, we get to know this reality through the places where the people organized, resisted, perished and celebrated.
In the municipality of Beja, Baleizão is a reminder of the precariousness and inequality caused by seasonal unemployment and the lack of alternatives in the landowning Alentejo. The murder of Catarina Eufémia in the 1950s illustrates the resistance of agricultural workers and the revolutionary propensity of Alentejans. It heralded an organizational capacity that would later be projected in the collective occupations and demonstrations during the Reforma Agrária of 1975.
Castro Verde has also left us many stories to tell: in Aivados, the land has belonged to the people since the 16th century. The land usurped during the Estado Novo was returned to the people of Aivados on April 20, 1975, in a demonstration of popular strength that is celebrated every year with a walk followed by a community lunch with the President of the People's Association. In Almeirim and Entradas it is now possible to see the day-to-day life that put all this political action into context: a Estado Novo-style school, with a slate board and desks, and a museum that bears witness to rural life, where 20th century farming techniques and machinery are explored.
Today, these lands are worked in different ways and are owned by new economic agents: we also seek to learn about the history of the land in the Alentejo from these protagonists. We therefore set out to walk backwards, from the present day to the 1950s, from the new modernized agriculture to the murder of Catarina Eufémia. Without “parti pris”, in the year of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Democracy in Portugal.
