We walked through beautiful places...

The 28th anniversary of the Fresco Route is highlighted in the Público newspaper.

This August, following our 2026 Rota do Fresco® Open Day, the Público newspaper once again wrote about this hidden beauty in the churches and convents of the Alentejo region, this time (as it has done on other occasions, the first time in 2001!) through the writing of Mara Gonçalves, exploring the opportunity of freshness offered by the natural climate refuges that are the churches made of earth, in mixed masonry and covered with vaults, punctuating the Alentejo landscape in rhythm .

(We often say that Cultural Heritage is the ultimate embodiment of the concept of "sustainability," avant la lettre... chameleon-like for hundreds of years, serving the function that best suits each era, here it is, so soon, also serving as a climate refuge in this increasingly chaotic and chaotic era that we will live through...)

But television also highlighted our Fresco Route®: the RTP series “Repovoadores” traveled to Vila Nova da Baronia to learn firsthand about the heritage revitalization work that the Route has been developing and, above all, how this work seeks to bring people closer to the heritage, creating new ways to know, value and experience it.

The Fresco Route is the first cultural tourism route created in Portugal in 1998 , and managed by Spira - heritage revitalization - a company specializing in projects to enhance cultural heritage, based in Vila Nova de Baronia (Alvito, Alentejo). The Fresco Route relies on an extensive network of local, regional, national and international partners, all working together for the last 28 years to safeguard, study and promote the largest collection of fresco paintings in the country, with almost 800 examples: the collection in the Alentejo region.
